- Another name for the wiper piston ring is the Napier ring. This helps to reduce excess oil and preserve the surface area of the piston. Piston rings help prevent the piston from hitting the cylinder walls.
- Scraper rings or oil control rings help control oil lubrication up and down the cylinder sleeve. It removes excess oil from the cylinder walls and returns the oil to the crankcase. It prevents oil from passing through the face of the cylinder and rings. Piston rings resist scuffing because they control the minimum amount of oil required for the piston to move up and down smoothly.
Generally, the cylinder sleeve and cylinder liner represent the same part of the engine. This prevents damage to the cylinder walls located on the inside of the engine.
